September 9, 2011: Total announces a major gas discovery in the Caspian Sea in the Absheron block offshore Azerbaijan.

The Absheron X-2 well has encountered more than 500 feet of cumulated net gas pays within high quality sands on the northern flank of a major 270 square kilometres structure. Reservoirs are expected to extend over the entire northern part of the structure.

He was the principal designer and founder of the first satellite and manned spacecraft. Thanks to him and the team of engineers on October 4, 1957 The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite, thus enabling start the space race and becoming the first  space «superpower». On August 19, 1960 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik-5, carrying the dogs Belka and Strelka. After an orbital flight, the dog returned safely to Earth. The first man in space, and once in orbit was a Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. On April 12, 1961 he performed the first orbital flight aboard Vostok. Launching manned space flights, the Soviet Union became the first «space superpower». On June 16, 1963 the first woman astronaut flew into space was Valentina Tereshkova. Then On March 18, 1965 Alexei Leonov the world’s first made spacewalk.

Vegetable oil based corrosion inhibitors

The problems and fatalities caused by corrosion in the oil and gas industry are not new. The corrosion process of carbon steel pipes and tanks induced by the presence of water has been a serious problem for decades. The effective control of corrosion extends the life of industrial equipment and decreases the related industrial costs dramatically. A particular advantage of corrosion inhibition is that it can be implemented or changed in situ without disrupting a process. The major industries using corrosion inhibitors are the oil and gas exploration and production industry, the petroleum refining industry, the chemical industry, heavy industrial manufacturing industry, water treatment facilities, and the product additive industries [1].Organic corrosion inhibitors are generally more environmentally friendly than inorganic corrosion inhibitors. The purpose of this work is to look for an opportunity of synthesizing effective corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas fittings, equipment and pipelines transporting multiple-phase systems. Therefore several vegetable oil fatty acids were extracted and reacted with diethylenetriamine [2,3].Initially, the vegetable oil was hydrolyzed with solution of 10% NaOH for 2 hours at c. 60-70 °C temperature. This process yield in fatty acid sodium salts which are reacted with 37% HCl acid solution for extracting the fatty acids.Based on prepared fatty acids the amide syntheses were performed. First, the fatty acid was added to the flask and heated until c. 80°C. At this steady temperature DETA gradually was added to the acid. The chemical reaction was performed at c. 130 – 140°C temperature with intensive mixing of the blend for 3 hrs. Determination of inhibition properties of the compounds was performed by gravimetric method. Polished and cleaned three steel plates were placed in a mixture of aqueous H2S solution and kerosene with 9:1 volume ratio. The solution was intensively blended for 6 hours [3].The weights of the steel plates were measured before and after the experiment to calculate the corrosion rate. This step was repeated without and with the synthesized substance at five different concentrations. The collected corrosion rates allowed to calculate the inhibition efficiency (i.e. protection properties), (Z) and rate slowing coefficient (g).As a conclusion we can point that the sunflower and soybean oil fatty acids amide derivative was synthesized from diethylenetriamine (DETA). Based on these experiments and performed calculations it was proved the synthesized amide molecules are demonstrating high inhibition efficiency. Even at low concentrations the compound has high protection ability (i.e. at 25 mg/l ~ 94% protection). There are stringent requirements for corrosion inhibitors and its application. One of them is stating that the inhibitor should be non-toxic. The performed research is indicating that the vegetable oil can be good raw material for preparation of “environmentally friendly” corrosion inhibitors.
